Reading Rainbow

book princess
Taking a short break to rest my brain cells. Aliens is on. Attic creature is stirring for the first time in weeks. Ate some nice greasy pork chops and I'm feeling good.

My schedule is coming together for Comic Con. So far I've got two signings and a panel, but there could be more. Stay tuned. I won't be going to the Romantic Times conference as I had originally planned. I had to make some hard choices about travel this year -- and New York won. I'm so sorry I won't get a chance to see some of you at the literacy signing.

Here, check this out: I've been following LeVar Burton on Twitter. I love him. I watched Reading Rainbow as much as I could when I was growing up, and I dare anyone to find a sweeter, more wonderful show for children. I rank it right up there with Sesame Street. So look at this!

Reading Rainbow was cancelled in 2006 (after first airing in 1983), and at some point they had updated the theme song to something I guess they thought would better fit the sensibilities of "today's children". Whatever. It's the same song, but faster, and with more special effects. It's not as sweet as the old version. But then, I'm an old fogie.

I used to watch Star Trek all the time. Everyone on that show was so talented.
It was the best.

Yay! I just added Levar Burton AND Brent Spiner to my tweethearts...hmm, sounds like a fanfic. I have to tell you, though, that the Fake LeVar Burton (LeVarB) is hilarious! And, while we're on a Star Trek, um, trek, why not add Wil Wheaton? (wilw)

Dude, as far as I'm concerned, all the Trek folk should be on Twitter. Which, unfortunately, I've become addicted to.

I hope the you-know-what search is going well. Darn PBS.

And speakin' o' PBS, we all hated the new theme, too! They took the innocence out of it.

Oh darnit, I was looking forward to seeing you at RT, this will be my first time going, but I love ComicCons. They are a blast.

I loved Reading Rainbow. It was one of the few shows I watched when I was a kid. Of course then I always wanted to read the books, even after I got older.

Totally agree that the old school Reading Rainbow theme song was much, MUCH better than the updated one. Much gentler and more soothing in my opinion and it definitely reminds me of simpler times. Pisses me off that during VH1's "I Love the 80s" special they had to use the newer opening. Ugh.

For a kid like me who was more into TV than books, Reading Rainbow struck a nice balance between the two mediums. Loved the storytellers and narrations. Furthermore, loved how the show's segments which explored all of these interesting aspects of life. How does one make a pizza? How does that big giant turkey in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade work? What's it like to work on the set of Star Trek: TNG? If you watched Reading Rainbow, honestly, you had to prepare to have your mind freakin' blown!

Oh yeah, since we've been talking about Levar Burton, here's this hilarious clip of him from E!'s "The Soup" co-starring...the cast of "Mad Men?" Just check it out!
